The SS Wisconsin was outfitted with six ring buoys, two of which were luminous.

They were: the Coast Guard from the Kenosha, Wisconsin station; the Racine Coast Guard; and The Chamber brothers, a diesel propelled fish tug with a crew of 7 fishermen who volunteered to aid the rescue.

The Wisconsin had an iron forefoot capable of riding up on and crushing ice to allow year round navigation on Lake Michigan. At one time declared one of the finest passenger ships on the Great Lakes, the S.S. Wisconsin was lost in a storm in October of 1929.
